Controlling Dust Mites in Your Home

What are Dust Mites?

Dust mites are one of the major indoor triggers for people with allergies and asthma. The tiny insect-like pests generate some of the most common indoor allergens. Hundreds of thousands of dust mites can live in the bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets or curtains in your home. They feed on dead human skin cells found in dust.

Dust Mite Allergy Symptoms

A dust mite allergy can range from mild to severe. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, about 20 million Americans have a dust mite allergy.

A mild case may cause the following symptoms:

  • Runny nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing

A severe case may cause the following symptoms:

  • Persistent cough
  • Congestion
  • Facial pressure
  • Severe asthma attack

Fighting Dust Mites

The number one way to alleviate dust mite allergy symptoms is to reduce the amount of dust in your home. Vacuuming and dusting the house on a regular basis is not enough to remove the dust mites. However, there are other steps you can take to reduce them.
