True HEPA Filtration

True HEPA

In order for an air purifier filter to be categorized as a True HEPA filter, it must remove 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. This is a standard regulated by the United State Department of Energy.

A micron is difficult to imagine, so we put together this chart to help you visualize the size of the particles we're talking about:

True HEPA filter removes up to 99.97% of airborne particles

A filter's efficiency refers to how many particles are trapped and removed from the airflow passing through the filter. At 99.97% efficiency, out of 10,000 particles to pass through the filter, only 3 escape. This includes smoke, dust, pollen, pet hair and dander, mold spores and dust mites.

The Better Choice

The market is flooded with 'HEPA-type' filters that appear to be similar to True HEPA filters. However, these filters aren't regulated. While they may claim to be 99.9% efficient, they avoid mentioning the size of the particles filtered. This means that larger particles, like smoke and mold spores, are left behind to float around your home.
